A growler filled last weekend during lunch at River House.

A: The BSDA is murky! In the clear growler, it looks like the muddiest creek water around. Opaque? Of course! A half a finger of off-white head accompanies each pour. Red lights add to the Christmas feel of the ale.

S: Cherries, a combination of sour and sweet, lead off. They are followed by the dark fruity sweetness of candi sugars. A toffee malt base even manages to sneak through. The nose indicates a strong beer lingering underneath the sweetness.

T: Allowed to warm up, the ale's toffee malt flavor comes through much clearer. That base is sweetly bready, a nice start to the ale. Behind the malt, which does take on an old ale feel, the candi sugars and cherry become more evident. The candi sugars, dark fruits, aren't as strong now that the toffee has become more evident. A brief burp or two does, however, bring back some fruits. The strength of the ale is especially evident at the end of a larger sip.

M: The toffee, Belgian yeast, and cherries all conspire to deliver a sweet, spicy body that warms with each sip. Plenty of flavor to go around.

D: At 10.5%, too much can be bad news. Even though I may feel this tomorrow, the strong flavor and warmth make it worthwhile. A strong seasonal from River House.
