Via nitro pour at the brewpub. This brew appears a vey dark brown color with a rising cascade of bubbles that slowly settles on the surface of the brew as a thick, silky brown head. When held to the light, it displays ruby and lighter brown hues around the edges. A complete wall of lace coats the glassware. A pretty amazing appearance that only nitro can deliver.

The smell of this brew is fresh grains, sweet with a scent of oats, roasted goodness similar to coffee, chocolate and a very light sour twang with a light young green yeastiness. The light sour twang creeps in and out of intensity as the brew warms up.

The taste is roasty with coffee and dark grain flavor that lingers in the mouth. A tinge of sourness keeps the roasted aspect in check and gives me the impression that sour mashing/blending techniques were used in this brew. It keeps the brew crisp and quite drinkable, I like it. As the brew warms, they is a bit of a mineral aspect that blends with the hop character. Quite a roasty aftertaste overall and tingly alcohol increases as the brew warms.

This is a medium bodied brew that leans toward full with a very thick, creamy smooth feel. Very easy drinking for 8%, I never would have guessed that is what it is. It is well done and perhaps there is some batch variation/tweaking since I see this is listed at below 6% currently.

A nitrogenated pour at the brewpub on a busy Saturday night.

A: The oatmeal stout is black, dark as night, with a coffee-and-cream darker head. That head is insulated and thick, lacing in strata in the tumbler.

S: When you finally get through the fluffy, foamy head, the oatmeal stout has dark malts, richly roasted, with chocolate and cream aromas. Not as powerful as the vanilla latte stout, although I do detect some vanilla bean sweetness.

T: Velvety smooth, an appropriately-named stout. The nitrogen aids, softening up the roasted malt flavors. Chocolate and burnt toast are plentiful, as are lactic sweet notes. The ale goes down surprisingly well, no hint of the nearly 6% abv. The dark sweet tastes linger after each sip. If not for the nitro, this would be sitting in my fridge right now.

M: The mouthfeel is so smooth as to be comment-worthy. The harsh edges of the stout have been shaved down to a sweet, lush sip. Nicely done.
