King Louis XVI, our Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Kentucky Common, is now available in 22oz bombers. This is the second release in our “Small Batch Series” following Subtle Beast (Imperial Stout) which was released in February 2017. Our Small Batch Series consists of limited edition beers brewed on our 7bbl system on 10th street in downtown Louisville.

King Louis XVI all started with our recipe for Kentucky Common, the only beer style native to Louisville. Except for this, at the Mayor’s request, we doubled the recipe giving the beer a good deal of sweetness with a dash of spice from the corn, barley and rye. Finally, to make a beer that would live up to our city’s namesake, we aged it in Kentucky bourbon barrels for two months.

The result is this unique, bourbon aged beer with notes of oak, vanilla and caramel. Look for it on shelves at your local liquor/beer store throughout Kentucky.

22 ounce bottle, no dating I noticed on it but I'm pretty sure I've had this at least 4 months or so. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a mostly clear amber color with about an inch off-white head that stuck around for a while. There's also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, caramel, rye and oak. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also a sour graininess noticeable too. Barrel is there but not overpowering. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and smooth with a good amount of carbonation. I thought this was a unique and good brew. It might not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it. Certainly worth a try if you've never had it before.
