This pre-prohibition style porter is brewed with 6-row malt and molasses. The name pays homage to America in the 1800s. A time when lamplighters lit streetlamps surrounded by Victorian homes and neighborhood brewpubs were prominent in Louisville.

Aroma is toasted/earthy malts and mild chocolate. The flavor is toasted malts, fruit, chocolate, thin body and a mildly sweet/slightly acidic/smooth finish.

Very dark, nearly opaque brown body; very thick and lasting head, a mix of soapy and dense appearances. A fine roasted grain char aroma; coffee-like; mocha; quiet sourness. The taste brings a rich cocoa and slightly sour mix to the palate; charred grain bite; coffee grounds. Medium body; somewhat thin; slick.
A near gusher on initial opening of the can (it has been sitting in the refrigerator for a few days), but the beer settles into a very fine looking dark ale with some slow and judicious mini-pours. The smell emits straight-forward heavily roasted grain notes, and I'm thinking the molasses gives the slightly sour impression. The taste and mouthfeel are when things show some weakness. Granted, the brewer's advertise this as a pre-Prohibition porter, so perhaps one shouldn't expect a fairly rich and decadent malt bomb, yet the beer isn't quite as robust as I (personally) would hope for. All in all, this is a fine porter, devoid of fancy pants adjuncts and ageing gimmicks.

Dark as coal. Tan head. Nose is ashy and chocolate. Taste is dark chocolate and cola. Mouthfeel is coated like milk chocolate. Bitterness is high for a porter.

I got a can of this off the single shelf at a Kroger just down the road from south metro ice in Dayton, OH. The beer poured an opaque dark with ecru head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had molasses presence. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with roast and molasses presence. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a solid beer.

From the 12 oz can in a snifter. This decent brew pours a rich
blackish brown with a sizeable head of light tan foam that settles
to a thick layer with robust sudsy lacing. Nos of heavy roasted malts
with nuts and coffee with touches of chocolate. Flavors follow the nose
with heavy nutty roasted malts with touches of char and brulee mingling
with dark chocolate and coffee with nary a hop to be found. Decent mouth
feel; medium full body, coating roasted goodness, medium light carbonation,
and a subtly thin and lightly watery finish.
Overall, this would rate higher with a better body. Flavors are pretty solid
and rich making it for a great stout drinkers porter minus the thin mouth feel.

A: Pours a dark, oily black with subtle chestnut highlights and a creamy tan head that lingers deep into the glass.
S: Nice, prominent aromas of brown toast, malt, roasted nuts, coffee, dark chocolate, and minerals.
T: Starts off sweet on the entry with notes of caramel, cream, and vanilla before heavier notes of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted chestnut, roasted almond, malt, brown toast, and minerals take over around mid-palate. The finish is smooth, offering lingering notes of caramel, coffee, roasted nuts, cream, minerals, and dark chocolate. Though a subtle hoppiness is present throughout, there are some herbal, lemony, grassy impressions that linger on the palate after the swallow.
M: Light-to-medium in terms of body and mostly smooth. Carbonation is crisp, complimenting the chalky mineral notes presented. With an abv of only 5.4%, this is an incredibly drinkable ale, though I would prefer just a little more heft in the mouth.
O: A supremely drinkable, flavorful porter. I could put away two or three of these at a time with no regrets. The lowish score kind of surprises me as this just strikes me as being rock solid and very true to style. It must not be extreme enough or something.

12 ounce can, no date on it that I noticed. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with a couple inch tan head that stuck around a while. There's also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like nuts, roasted malt, and bittersweet chocolate. Taste is similar to the aroma, with roasted malt, molasses, bittersweet chocolate and nutty flavors. Mouthfeel/body is light, it's an easy drinking porter with a good amount of carbonation. I wish this had a little more body to it, but overall I think this is a decent enough brew. I could sit around and drink a few of these.
