From the bottom of the can: "11/12/2019 09:19"
Appearance: The body is black and it has a large, dense, brown head with a combination of small, medium, and large bubbles. The beer slowly fades out to a short but pronounced head. Spotty lacing.
Aroma: The beer has a very strong aroma of orange peel. It smells like an orange has been freshly cut into. Behind this is a very soft aroma of chocolate, but the orange scent is overpowering. It is unmistakable, strong, and prominent. The brewer really hit the mark with this one.
Taste: Right off the bat there is a strong orange flavor which is both acidic and fruity flavored. It tastes almost too fruity. There is a chocolate flavor that follows with a pleasant earthy blanket of coffee grounds and burnt firewood. When drinking the beer for a while, a bright citrus aftertaste comes up and joins those earthy flavors.
Mouthfeel: The acidity is very high for a beer of this style, to the point where it might drive people away. It has a bitterness that comes from heavily kilned grains but also a pithy citrus fruit bitterness. Near the end there is a warmer and softer coffee bitterness which settles things out.
Overall: The can states that this is "Bourbon Barrel-Aged with Valencia and Curacao Orange Peels." The bourbon never makes an appearance but this beer surely will not leave the drinker wanting for more flavor or aroma. It has a ton of flavor and aroma. Where this beer is lacking, is in balance; it simply doesn't know when to turn flavors and aromas on or off to support the greater good of the beer. Even with this over-saturation of character I would really recommend trying this beer for the experience, especially if you are a fan of in-your-face flavors and aromas. It won't leave you wanting and that is always a good thing. I would really enjoy drinking this beer again to see if the brewers were able to achieve balance, but if not, at least I would have an enjoyable and very memorable beer. The highlight of this beer is the fantastic aroma, followed by a bright citrus aftertaste.
