Presentation: 12oz brown bottle with a homebrew-like label.
Appearance: Dark, clear amber with deep red hues and an off-white creamy lace.
Smell: Fruity esters, faint touch of toffee, wood and a floral hop bouquet. Smells a bit oxidized though.
Taste: Fairly smooth upfront, with an even medium-body and creamy feel. Somewhat malty and robust, but not sweet ... perhaps a faint touch of dextrin flavour. Hop bitterness is astringent, lemon/lime. There's some roasted, earthy and smokey flavours that follow, which seem a bit out of place. It all blends in with a slight raisin flavour that seems to spring from the hop character. Touch of bubble-gum pulls thru at the end, with a lot of woody/cardboard notes (oxidized?). Finish is fairly clean with some residual flavours.
Notes: An unexpected bitter and a bit more bold/robust than what I'm used to for the style. Not bad, but it takes some getting used to. I also think my sample was very oxidized. Still, worth a try ... just make sure it's fresh.
Dedicated to the guys over at http://www.mid-statecycles.com. Thanks to Joe Z for the sample and Johnny P for hauling to my place.
