Steel Town Stout– from Full Pint. 16 oz can picked up from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. In reefer at store, acquired 01/08/23, $ 14.08 (Including tax)/four-pack, $ 0.219/fl oz. Reviewed 24/08/23 (Review 3149). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 52.7 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 58.2 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear lite, light penetration at the edges (brown).
Head: Large (Maximum 6.3 cm, aggressive center pour), almond, high density, quickly contracting to a 0.4 – 1.3 cm irregular crown and a thin, partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Roasted malt. No yeast, no hops. No ethanol (7.6 % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 3 – Begins bitter with distinct roasted malt and astringent enough to make my teeth fee dry. No yeast, no hops. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No gastric warming. Slight smokiness and an odd organic chemical cleaner taste.
Palate – 4 – Medium; dry; soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated personal container) The roasted malt bitterness is OK, but the astringency makes me think it was over-cooked – too many tannins. In general, not good. What to do with the other three cans?
