Galway Bay Brewery “Solemn Black”
44 cl can coded Bb: 09/24 1224 CO: 21/23 16:17:38” and sampled on 22 NIV 2023
Notes: Brewed with Chinook, Simcoe, and Centennial hops at 8.5% ABV. Opaque black body beneath a short head of tan foam. The aroma is earthy and resinous. The taste is malty, roasty, citrusy, chocolatey, woody, alcoholic, piney, resinous, toasty, and coffee-like. A solid bitterness centers it and leads it to a dry and resinous finish with some roastiness, citrus, and pine lingering. Medium bodied and crisp. Apart from a somewhat limited head retention this is one of the best black IPAs I’ve tasted.

Solid opaque black colour throughout. Rich toasty notes and a little boozy on the nose with bitter, citrusy and tropical hops. Tropical hops upfront but the dominant flavour profile are the citrusy and pine hops, which linger on a bit into a slightly toasty burnt grain, resiny finish. You can't taste the alcohol on this one but its big and flavourful with all the hops. A fun drinker.

On tap at Black Sheep, Dublin.
Black with chestnut highlights and a rim of tan. 4
Resin, mint, ash. 4
Hints of toffee and anise, coffee candy, then resin, Triple Sec, herb, and pine sap with lingering aspirin bitterness. 4.25
Almost medium, salty, oily. 4
Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe
Not a stout, that’s for sure. Roast sneaks in, but hops are oil over juice and that’s understating it. There’s a ringing herbal, almost medicinal impact - Jagermeister comes to mind. Missing something - more power than finesse - but pushes out sonic waves of flavor. 4.25
