Buried At SeaBuried At Sea

Brewed by:
Galway Bay Brewery

Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Decadent and complex while remaining wholly refreshing and drinkable. This stout is brewed with milk sugars and chocolate to give rich flavours and body that goes down smooth. Taste of chocolate and smooth mouthfeel, due to the additions of dark chocolate and milk sugars (lactose) respectively. While dark, rich and decadent this beer finds balance and subtlety in its lightness and drinkability. Great for matching with sweeter dishes and intense desserts.

Pint on keg at The Salt House, Galway, Ireland (€5):
This one was a very nice first beer from the Galway Bay Brewery & one that I was happy to have tracked down after much searching in the city's bars that day. The beer was a very well-balanced, smooth offering that started with quite a lot of chocolate flavours coming through & a decent amount of sweetness too; an excellent stout & one that I'd be happy to go back to in the future.

Very dark brown/black beer. Tanned head that doesn't last long.

Nice bitter chocolate smell, mild malts there too. Hint of coffee and lactose.

Bitter malts, chocolate taste. A lovely mild milky sweetness, but not too much like other milk stouts. Again, slight hint of a coffee taste and some caramel there too.

Great mouthfeel with nice soft carbonation. Silky.

One of my favourite beers.

Poured a very dark brown, almost black.

Smelled mainly of sweet chocolate, and hints of coffee.

Tasted smooth and sweet over all. Was slightly syrupy and had the chocolate malt taste throughout. Slightly bitter-hop finish and lingering sweetness. Very drinkable and slightly syrupy, but not too much.

Would I buy it again? Yes!

On tap at BrewDock, Dublin.

Chocolate amber, with creamy tan head that runs away fast but speckles.
Big roasty cocoa bean and chicory nose with some earth and mulch.
Dusty cocoa powder, some coffee bean, German black rye bread and branchy hops.
Cola and ash finish and drying, surprisingly bitter linger.
Almost medium, round, some chew.

Mucho chocolate. A very roasty dry Irish underneath the chocolate (rather than something sweet, as it would be in most chocolate stouts) which makes this pretty lean and a bit too burnt. Different enough to make it a quirky choice as a house stout, though it's still not a great chocolate beer.

A: The beer pours a dark black body with a nice tan head.

S: The beer has a nice sweet chocolatey smell with some bitterness too.

T: This is where the beer shines IMO. It has a nice amount of chocolate, milk sweetness, bitter dark malt and a tiny bit of coffee.

M: The beer has an amazing mouthfeel from the nitrotap and goes down so easily with a nice creaminess.

O: This is an amazing beer that I wish we could get in the states..
