Poured with a deep color and a majestically thick head. Nose had a chocolate overtone, with some walnut, coffee, light lactose and barley malt.

The flavor is malty and dry with pronounced chocolate tones, oak and some bourbon. Very light on the palate but very tasty.

Chocolate dominant, with notes of vanilla, bourbon, and toasted malt. Seems sweet.

Flavor is slightly acrid, with roast malt underlying, slightly bitter. The alcohol heat accentuates the bitterness. Huge toasted malt in the finish.

Big bottle. Pours a thick near black color with a moderately thick brown head on it. Nose is pleasantly roasty with some great hints of sweetness from the caramel malts; decent little bit of bourbon in there, though it’s more of a subtle undertone. Taste is roasty and fairly sweet and super smooth, with the thickness of oil. I like it.

Big thanks goes out to beeruser for sharing this one during one of our random Sunday tastings! Bottle #0081! Served from bottle into Sweetwater 15th Anniversary snifter. Poured pitch black with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate, wood, and sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate, wood, and sweet alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was pretty decent brew. While this one wasn’t overly complex, it did a pretty good job with what it had to work with. A very nice balance of everything was left on the table here for you to enjoy. A really well thought out brew and nicely constructed to keep you coming back sip after sip. Glad I got the opportunity to try this one. I suggest you do the same if you get the chance.

Trail Magic Barrel Aged RIS
750mL bottle into a tulip
March 2012, bottle number 0353

A big thanks to Finatic for sending this one over as an extra! A limited BA RIS as an extra, gotta love it!

A: Pours a somewhat thin appearing very dark brown with lightening on the edges and 1.5 fingers width of light mocha colored head, that is very bubbly but takes a good amount of time to dissipate down. Leaves a good amount of streaky lacing down the sides of the glass.

S: Aroma is bourbon, a very unique tangy sweetness (maybe sorghum syrup, not sure what that is), roasted malt, woody oak, some grassy/herbaceous characters. A swirl of the snifter brings out hints of coffee and booze. Part of it I really dig, but theres an odd aroma that is somewhat off putting and pulls it down.

T: Taste is initially very roasted malt forward , with milk chocolate on the back end. Then other flavors come out including vanilla, hints of coffee, sugary sweetness, a touch of dark fruits, some booze, an herbaceous character, bitterness, and a bourbon character that is definitely present but could be stronger. This has a pretty complex flavor profile, which is a pleasant surprise. Very well done.

M/D: Creamy and silky smooth, very low carbonation (which I appreciate), but not flat. Medium bodied, but a touch thin for the style.

O: Overall, a really nice offering. The nose is a somewhat lacking, but it makes up for it with a complex and rather tasty flavor profile. Could have stronger bourbon characteristics, which I find myself saying about most BA ISs I have. Still though, a well done beer. Thanks Finatic for sending this one my way.

750 cork and caged bottle, #0098. Thanks Dan!

Pours extremely dark brown out of the bottle and is pretty close to black in the glass with a small thin mocha head.

Aroma has roasted chocolate malts and cocoa powder but has an interesting sweetness imparted by the honey and sorghum syrup. Not getting a lot of barrel character at all.

Taste is more of the same and, much like the aroma, doesn't have much bourbon barrel that I can taste. There is a sweet creamy character that must be due to the sorghum syrup and a bit of tingly spiciness from the honey. Finish is fairly roasty and starts to burn with alcohol after a few sips.

Mouthfeel is interesting because it seems creamy and smooth but still lacks a little body. The syrup smooths things out but it's still a little light for an RIS.

I've had little from Nantahala but I think this is a great start to the new Trail Magic program. I would love to see what a little more time in the barrel could have added to this one.
