TRYED THIS BEER AWHILE AGO- IT WAS A GREAT LONDON PORTER STYLE GREAT HEAD VERY DARK - DEFFENTLY A PORTE

The appearance was a dark red close to brown / slightly black on the inside. There was a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute leaving some light lacing here and there. The smell a roasty grainy sort of thing going on with some grassy hoppiness along with a light milk chocolate. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. I would say it came across fairly grassy as it ran over my tongue. Overall, this was a decent Porter, its nothing special.

 

750 ml bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present, but I am pretty sure that this beer is a little over a year old at this point. My second beer from Argus Brewery, out of Chicago. Going in unbiased; I have no idea what to expect.

Poured into a Guinness Extra Stout St. James's Gate Dublin glass mug.

A - Pours three to four fingers of good creamy fluffy chocolate-tan head on top of a dark ruby-chestnut colored body. Some stringy webbed lacing. Looks very nice.

S - Smell is very nice also. Luscious creamy chocolate, powdery cocoa, vanilla, some cream, mineral water, brown sugar, & molasses.

T - Taste follows the nose: crisp chocolate malt, semi-bitter cocoa, cold coffee bean roast, some metallic mineral water, sticky brown sugar, and some fig / date / raisin on the end.

M - Creamy and smooth, yet somewhat thin and watery mouthfeel, with lightly bitter coffee bean and chocolate roast lingering on the palate. Medium-light bodied for a porter, but suited to style, with good carbonation.

Overall, a nice beer from Argus. Classic and simple; nothing over the top. Glad to have tried it, a solid beer from these guys, and at a good price point of only $8.99 for a big 750 ml bottle. I look forward to trying more from these guys.

Second time around with this, 750mL from Bottles & Cans.

Black with dark brown edges in the light as its poured into a tulip glass. Billowing head of creamy tan foam, sticky and adhering nicely to the glass, forming concentric rings of lace. Lasting retention with an ever present skim across the surface.

Subtle roasty aroma, mellow but smooth and pleasant with some vagely sweet milk chocolate notes.

Soft smooth feel, creamy with light carbonation. Feels pretty nice, flavors are straightforward and full of mellow roast, dry chocolate, and a light dry bitterness in the aftertaste. Seems to hit all the characterisitcs of the style well. Very clean and put together, seems something better suited to cask than 750 bottles, but that's what we have here. Hope they make this more than just once, it's probably the best Argus beer i've tried.

 

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a 20oz imperial pint.

A: Pours pretty jet-black with 2 1/2 fingers of creamy, light brown foam on top. Retention was quite good with loads of messy lace left behind to decorate the inside of the glass.

S: Heavy roast and strong notes of dark chocolate & cocoa. Relatively simple and traditional and inviting.

T: Mostly dark roasty malt with a bit of chocolate, cherry, and dark fruit mixed in for good measure. Not as friendly as the nose.

M: Suprisingly full and pillowy considering how strong the roasty notes are. Takes the edge off and adds a redeeming quality.

O: Nice and traditional. Would've liked a bit more depth to the taste, but it IS a London Porter and aren't those on the roasty side of things?

Served in a Bruery snifter.

The first in an apparent line of Private Reserve beers presented in 750ml bottles, rather than the usual 6-pack o' 12-oz-ers. Get some. It pours a very dark black-brown, just barely highlighted in cursed ruby, topped by about a half-finger or so of dirty dark tan foam. The nose comprises lightly-roasted malts, mild (though still fairly astringent) coffee, light chocolate powder...no, scratch that: it's closer to Nutella. Some vague, sweet breadiness pervades the background. The taste focuses on the roast and the coffee, both blending together very convincingly. Still, a hint of dark chocolate peeks out at the finish in a tiny spike. Not bad. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a pretty dry finish. Overall, a solid English-style porter, fairly simple, but still rather effective and enjoyable.
