16oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square Downtown, etc, etc.
This beer appears a rather dark, red-brick amber hue, with one finger of wanly puffy, somewhat foamy, and mostly just bubbly beige head, which leaves a stellar, and consistent array of bonsai tree lace around the glass as it quickly abates.
It smells of roasted, slightly metallic biscuity caramel malt, further wet char, a twinge of earthy yeast, a soft, separate graininess, ethereal meaty notes, and very plain weedy, leafy noble hops. The taste is toasted grainy pale and caramel malt, soft black orchard fruit, mildly phenolic yeast, cold, well-used barbecue grill, and still understated leafy, earthy, and weedy hops.
The carbonation is fairly peppy in its tightly held frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, that particular ashiness floating about of no real concern. It finishes just off-dry, the base malt graininess asserting itself amongst the swirling toasted esters.
Another (like they've made so many) heady and well-rendered offering from this lager-only Edmonchuk operation. Maybe not the perfect summertime tipple, but it's working right now for this lapsed fanboy, in the interest of coaxing further output from this seemingly shy outfit.
