16oz glass at Beer Revolution in downtown Edmonton. Nice to see more ales getting pumped out of that Heritage building ten or so blocks from here - way to go, Bruce!
This beer appears a crystal clear, bright medium copper amber colour, with one waitress-skinny finger of weakly puffy, barely foamy, and mostly just bubbly dirty white head, which leaves some decent dissipating fog bank lace around the glass as things slowly bleed away.
It smells of bready and lightly crackery pale malt, a sort of soured caramel sweetness, mixed orchard stone fruit, a twinge of Hubba Bubba, and plain leafy, weedy, and grassy noble hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, a bit of damp smoke, further toasted breakfast cereal notes, hard to delineate dark fruit, and more simple leafy, earthy, and floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate to the job assigned, what with its generic frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and sort of smooth, as those testy and pithy smoky esters don't really make it any easier. It finishes off-dry, the sturdy malt holding up its end of the bargain, while the smoke turns musty, and the heretofore wan hops fully turn tail.
Yeah, I heard it through the grapevine that there were supply challenges in the production of this offering, and that seems readily apparent here - the hops are certainly old school in the rendering, but come across as disjointed at best, and touched in the head at worst. Not bad overall, I suppose, but really more akin to a mid-range ESB.
