20oz (how I miss these) pint at O'Byrne's Irish Pub on Whyte Ave in Edmonton - wow, what a walk down memory lane! No idea what the name for this offering means here.
This beer appears a clear, medium copper amber colour, with one skinny finger of weakly foamy and wispy off-white head, which leaves some random tacky lace around the glass as things duly sink away.
It smells of fresh tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, and kiwi), grainy and crackery caramel malt, some minor biscuity toffee, a lesser domestic citrus rind acridity, and further leafy, weedy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is semi-sweet bready and doughy caramel malt, candied orange and lemon, muddled exotic fruit, and more zingy leafy, piney, and slightly perfumed floral verdant hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly average in its merely supportive frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, as the hops here seem to be of the benevolent sort. It finishes off-dry, the pleasantly mixed fruitiness and heady malt doing well to linger in an engaging tandem.
Overall, Yellowhead seems to be upping their non-lager game of late - and this is a prime example. Lots of varied and heady hop character abounding, without going overboard (or encroaching into IPA territory) with the bitterness quotient. Tasty, and easy to put back, so much so that I really wish I had another reason to stick around this pub for the rest of the day.
