Barrier Brewing Co. "Uncharted Waters"
16 fl. oz. can coded "06/22/22" and sampled on 08/07/22
$4.75 @ Kunda Beverage, King of Prussia, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: Although it doesn't say it on the label I'll assume this is an IPA as it's 7.8% ALC/VOL and double dry hopped with Mosaic, Rakau, and Columbus hops. Wow, it's super hazy as well. In fact, it's murky. I can see little bits of particulate in suspension. The body is a yellow-tan beneath a finger's width of white foam. The aroma is resinous, piney, fruity (apricot, peach, apple), earthy, spicy, and lightly floral. The flavor follows with everything found in the nose present in similar amounts, and some additional notes of berry, mango, herbs (oregano, sage), black peppercorn, black licorice, grass, and curry (? - yeah, I don't think I'm imagining that it's got a hint of Madras curry to it ~ weird, but OK). The alcohol is present but no more so than you want in a beer of almost 8%. The malt is sweetish but I can't really make out what's going on within it due to the heavy hop flavors. My guess would be that it's Pilsner, wheat, and oats. It's solidly bitter, and there's a lot of hop burn going on. When combined with the spiciness, earthiness, resin, pine, alcohol, and herbs it finishes dry. There's initially some malt and fruit lingering for a few seconds and then it dries with the herbs, resin, pine, spice, and earthiness hanging on for what seems like minutes. In the mouth it's medium-full in body and gently bristling with carbonation. The head held up very well, and the lacing is even better. This is an intense IPA that deserves your attention although it would be impossible to ignore it.

Hoppy CANksgiving CANtesy of The CANQuest (tm)! I CANnently get just one (1) precious day off per week as a 360-day USPS employee & I try to visit the Friendly Greek Bottle Shop (FGBS) on a biweekly basis. The owner sets aside one (1) of each new CAN that comes in for me & I usually take everything that he has, inCANding & especially CANything from Barrier. I REALLY dig these guys & I would love to visit the brewery once things finally return to a sense of normalcy.
From the CAN: "In [CAN]junction with Vitamin Sea Brewing"; "DDH w/Mosaic/Rakau/Columbus"; "Designed by Krittalug".
The label art is gorgeous, depicting a starry sunset that ends at the edge of the sea, followed by its deep-blue depths. As a retired US Navy sailor, this was a quite-familiar sight, one that I often took in from the fantail of many ships while smoking an after-dinner cigar & having a cuppa joe before returning to work in the storerooms. I applaud their creativity yet again!
My Crack! of the vent was met with a light fingertip spritz, CANtesy of yet CANother brimful craft CAN with nowhere for the tongue to go when forced in by the tab. I then beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass, only to realize that it had been misidentified on this site & was actually an NEIPA! 8=O I watched in rapt fascination as it formed two-plus fingers of dense, creamy, foamy, bone-white head with excellent retention, resembling whipped cream or meringue atop lemon pie filling. 8=O It's not time for dessert! I hadn't had my turkey supper yet! 8=( Color was a deeply-cloudy, murky, turbid Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose held a cool mintiness atop a tropical fruitiness. 8=O It was NOT time for dessert! Mouthfeel was big, full & creamy with an oily slickness on the tongue. The taste, while fruity & minty cool, was more peachy than tropical although I will grant you that there was also a modicum of tropical. Mmm. This was making me more & more thankful by the sip. Finish was semi-dry to dry with just enough residual sweetness to keep it from being totally dry. Very nice! YMMV.

Thick juicy golden body topped with frothy mountainous white. Aroma of wet grass, pine, mint, rind, and papaya. Tastes of citrus, pear, papaya, light pine, and mild bitterness. Fruit nectar finish. Thick bodied with medium carb.

Excellent hop profile with Columbus, Mosaic, and Rakau- an NZ hop.
Nice pour 4F in a Spielgelau IPA glass with a cloudy light grapefruit color.
Floral aroma, citrus sweet.
Taste develops with warming: sweet, citrus, melon, tropical fruit.
Not too hoppy- a good balance with the taste profile.
I really enjoyed this DIPA.

From a 10-day-old can, pours a bright and hazy yellow-orange. Frothy white foam leaves good lacing. Smell and taste have nice layers of citrus, tropical fruit and a little earthy dank. Soft bitterness, smooth feel. Good beer.
