L: Pours a jet black, oily brew that forms a nice head of cigar-brown foam. Head dissipates slowly, leaving a nice layer of retention on top and some decent lacing. When held to the light, this beer appears black and soulless.
S: Classic RIS: roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, molasses, some bourbon barrel perhaps?
T: Follows nose initially - coffee, chocolate, bourbon barrel (more apparent here), vanilla, burnt sugar, and roasted malts. Robust but something is a little awry. Strange aftertaste. Overall that doesn't detract much - there are much more unconventional imperial stouts than this.
F: Medium-to-full bodied. Light carbonation. Creamy and lingering.
O: This is technically a Russian Imperial Stout but is less heavy on the coffee than I would have liked. There is some bourbon barrel here, and the ABV is a healthy 11%. This is a fine RIS to sample, but there are more unique options available that improve on this beer's foundation of coffee, malts, and barrel.

Not bad tasting, but has the certain metallic characteristic that haunts some stouts. That’s what brings it down.
