22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/3/2017. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, peach, pineapple, citrus peel/rind, pepper, and pine; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, licorice, molasses, raisin, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of roast/bready/rye malt and moderate citrus/pine/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, peach, pineapple, citrus peel/rind, pepper, and pine; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, licorice, molasses, raisin, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine/citrus peel/rind/grassy hop, roast/char bitterness; and rye spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, peach, pineapple, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, smoke, charcoal, licorice, molasses, raisin, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready/rye malt and moderate citrus/pine/earthy hop flavors; with a nice hop/char bitter/sweet and rye spiciness balance; with minimal acrid/astringent hop/roast flavors lingering after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness and rye spiciness. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/silky, and fairly sticky/chalky/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Pleasantly increasing warmth of 11.5% after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Russian imperial stout. All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready/rye malt and moderate citrus/pine/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV; despite the fairly aggressively bitter/drying finish. Very similar to the 2015 version, with even more citrusy/fruity/earthy hop presence. Fantastic rich malt complexity. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as usual.
