Haze Cake is our latest addition to the Space Cake family. Wheat joins the signature Space Cake malt bill of sweet notes and shockingly smooth flavor, adding a fuller mouthfeel and hazy appearance in this Hazy Double IPA. Multiple dry-hoppings of Mosaic and Citra make this beer a powerfully aromatic and tropically engaging tale of laser-aided rescue.

Ingredients: Mosaic, Citra, and Centennial hops; Honey, Pale, and 2-Row malts, Wheat.

Clown Shoes Beer "Haze Cake"
16 fl. oz. can coded "pkg 047 02/14/22 18:17" and sampled on 07/11/22
$4.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: A rough pour has brought up an inch and a half of off-white foam atop a cloudy golden-amber body. Orchard fruits waft across a field of sweetish, bready, and wheaty malt in the aroma. The flavor follows. The malt is rich, sweet, bready and honeyish. I'm quite sure there's some Munich malt in the grain bill, and perhaps some honey malt as well. The bitterness is very firm, and maybe even solid. Yeah, I think it's stronger than it actually appears within the malt because of the way it lingers in the finish. I'm going to guess at around 55 IBUs. The hops take a backseat on this one both in the aroma and the flavor but they are at least clearer here. There's some apple, orange, peach, blueberry, and passionfruit. That has to be Mosaic, and possibly Amarillo or Citra. There's a really nice balance between the sweetish and wheaty malt and the fruity hops, as well as the sweetness of the malt and the bitterness. As noted, it's sweetish but the bitterness is enough to balance it and bring it to a mainly dry finish with some malt eroding just as quickly as the fruitiness fades. A minor bit of duty earthiness and some bitterness is all that lingers after that. In the mouth it's medium-full in body - no, I think it's feull-medium! A gentle carbonation livens the tongue. All in all this is a pretty exceptional double IPA that could serve as an after dinner beer, a slow sipper at night while reading, or even a dessert beer either on its own or as an ingredient in something else. I'm drinking it on the back porch as the sun sets before dinner and that's fine too!

Picked-up a four-pack of cans at Luke's in Plymouth for about fourteen dollars. Canned on date of 10/13/21. My eleventh brew from these guys. This was not that great, was stored @ room temperature, not sure if that factored in.

Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has an orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smellis of mango, peaches. Taste is the same as the aroma, alcohol is present, moderate bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a bit on the boozy side, but a pretty good beer.

Had Haze Cake poured from pint can, bottom stamped (apparently) canned on "02/01/21," into nonic pint.

Pours deep, murky amber-gold, with yeast floaties, and 1-finger near-white head, with good retention, pulling etched lace down the glass. Aroma of sweet stone fruits and melon off the pour, turning a little sharper and citrusy as warms. Begins with a little fruity bite, then creamy malt takes over and dominates, complemented by melon, citrus and tarter stone fruits as warms, before a crisp, piney but not excessively bitter finish.

An ugly beer, with varied and lasting fruit aromas and flavors, but what you will remember are the creamy malts and body.

Sister site Untappd has a new badge for Clown Shoes' Space Cake, which I have previously reviewed. I picked up a CAN during my latest Friendly Greek Bottle Shop (FGBS) exCANsion & decided to grab a couple of other CANs from the brewery that I had not previously reviewed. This is one of those CANs, in support of The CANQuest (tm).

From the CAN: "Haze Cake Hazy Double India Pale Ale"; "Our Mission: To Produce Beer without Pretension while Being Free and a Little Crazy"; "Classic Series"; "To defeat the Space Cake armada is but a fleeting triumph for Miracle Mike. A pilfered Lager has been repurposed from a tool of destruction to one of salvation. Mike and Leo have leapt into the haze to rescue their buddy[,] Sam. What are friends for, if not to save your pristinely preserved head from the terrors of deep space? Haze Cake takes our trademark Double IPA Space Cake into the Land of Haze. Mosaic, Centennial, and Citra hops place juicy flavors at the forefront, alongside Space Cake's classic sweet malt profile. BOOM! Hey, Mike, take it easy with that laser."

Okay, then. It seems like they may have been hitting the "cake" a little hard, but now it was my turn, beginning with a Crack! of the vent. followed by a steady C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I was ambushed by a surprising fingertip spritz, thanks to its being a brimful craft CAN. No matter as I am well-versed in such ocCANurrances. I was met with just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with very good retention, leaving a load of sticky lacing in its wake as it fell. Color was a hazy Amber to Deep-Amber/Light-Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13). Nose seemed less tropical and more towards peach & apricot, in a jammy/preserves way. 8=O Mouthfeel was big & full, like a dollop had been scooped into my mouth & onto my tongue. The taste evinced flavors ranging from the aforementioned stone fruits to the tropical fruits alluded to in the Notes, along with a sweet, but not cloying, maltiness. Mmm. This was one of the more impressive NEIPAs that I have tried, but I still wonder what it might might be like with filtration or some form of clarity. Hmm. Finish was semi-dry, not really sweet, but not exactly dry, either. Hmm. YMMV.

Initial aroma of peaches and cotton candy. Very smooth in the mouth, heavy alcohol up front and aftertaste. Sharp lemon peel followed by papaya. The name is very appropriate.... Haze Cake. Not favorite, yet not bad either. At the bar at Marilyn's in Morgantown, 11/2/2020.

Pours a very cloudy, opaque golden amber color with a thick foamy head. Head retention and lacing are excellent. Aroma of bready malts with some citrus and a little brown sugar. Actually smells more like a DWCIPA. Sweet, bready malts on the taste. Citrus with some mild caramel and piney resin. Not a lot of bitterness, but IBUs seem high. Very tasty beer, but it is a DWCIPA and not a NEIPA.

16oz can poured into a tulip

A- pours a hazy golden-orange color with a one-finger foamy white head that has great retention and leaves some lacing behind as it settles

S- aroma has some zesty citrus notes, with grapefruit and tangerine, followed by some grassy notes. Undertones of bready malt

T- juicy citrus follows the nose with some pithy orange and some grapefruit zest. mid-palate offers some mango sweetness, the finish is slightly malty with a nice mix of citrus and sweet mango on the linger

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish, high drinkability

O- a solid hazy IPA that focuses on citrus and tropical fruit and has just enough malty backbone to balance it out

another tasty offering from the folks at clown shoes. just a tiny bit oversweet for my taste but it certainly works. canned on 7/20/2020, consumed 9/21, so thanks ot my local beer monger for getting it to me in a hurry. Re-reviewed: canned 2/14/22, consumed 3/31/22. still worthy! Enjoy!
L: drinking from the can and it's yet another funny, freaky can from C Shoes.
S: aroma is not terribly strong but it smells good. sweet citrus, a little brown sugar.
T: delivers on the nose, with pineapple coming through. some bitterness as well but for my taste i'd adjust the ratio. still, it's good with abv well hidden
F: rich mouthfeel in keeping with its other strengths
O: ok, it's a win! put it on your list & enjoy!
