Finding a Belgian-made lager in the states that isn't Stella Artois is like finding a needle in a haystack. Well, a needle has been found in the form of Strubbe Pils. It comes with a light green label and in a 500 ml bottle. On to the beer:

The body holds a pale golden straw color with a bit of haze. On top sits an inch of white foam, which retains itself well. A smell, a caution. I smell oxidation, apples, grass...I'm not ready to go on, but I will.

That's not very flavorful. And for bad measure, it's watery too. There's a little grassy note plus the sweet malt base which has a honey-like sweetness. This Belgian lager moment is just as bad as my experience with Maes, and it takes something bad to make that happen. Strubbe Pils can buzz off back to Belgium as far as I'm concerned.

On tap at the Hop Devil's Belgian room in NYC, Pours clear light amber, with a white head, sticky and extensive layers of fine lacing.Grassy, nose. Dry, clean with more grassy flavor notes, crisp and thirst quenching. Notes of butter and leather, hoppy late. Workable sessioner

On tap at The Hop Devil Grill's separate Belgian Room. A decent refreshing crisp drinking pilsner with some complexity, better than expected. Easy on the palate as more than Saaz hops used, well malted for a pils. Lacing on white body. Moderate carbonation. Fresh.

On-tap at the Hop Devil in NYC

Super pils my ass. This comes off like another, albeit cleaner, Euro pale lager. Light bready malt and just a pinch of hops. Has neither the malt or hops complexity of a good pils. Also lacks in mouthfeel. At least it was drinkable, nothing offensive (misleading name aside). Avoid.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt.

Clear straw yellow, pretty typical pils appearance. Pours with an inch of head that recedes pretty quickly. Pretty decent nose, skunky with a leafy, herbal hop quality and a little biscuity malt. Grainy and malty on the tongue, mildly bitter and hoppy. Has a lemony, zesty, grassy hop flavor and a mineral backbone. Slightly heavier texture than most German pilsners, and slightly buttery too, making it a bit closer to a Czeck pils. Pretty clean stuff, but nothing about it stands out to me.

Pours clear yellow color with a small white head that faded quickly and left minimal lacing.

Smells of light grains, caramel, light citrus hops, husk or wheat, hay, grass and other sweet cereal-like smells that help provide the typical Euro pilsner or lager aroma; this was a little sweeter smelling than normal, so it's above average.

Tastes like it smells, with grains, caramel, light citrus hops, light citrus fruit, husk, wheat, hay, grass, flowers, corn stalks, sweet cereal like Frosted Flakes and some light sugary sweetness; above average again, but this is very basic and has no real exciting elements to the taste. This might be due course for the style, but for me this was fine to wash down a burger.

Mouthfeel was light and crisp with light carbonation and a light body and overall feel. A lighter typical Euro pilsner that had above average flavor, but lacked any real hop bite, spice or zest.

A good session beer if you're looking for average flavor, but don't expect an exciting taste.

This company must have a great sales rep, as I had this today at Resto (29th St.) and see from some of the other reviews that this beer is all over NYC at the moment. Hats off to that sales team, now they need to get the brewer to add more hops.

Appearance: pours a clear straw yellow color with a 2” head that lasts. Thick lacing coats the glass. Loads of carbonation bubbles rise quickly to the surface.

Smell: dry grassiness is all that is detectable.

Taste: mildly tart grapes, honey, grass, and a very light bitterness make up a pretty lackluster pils. Very dry also.

Mouthfeel: light in body. Dry and crisp from start to finish. Clean and mildly refreshing aftertaste.

Drinkability: so-so as this is not a very exciting pils, but is pretty easy to quaff. Just a little bit too dry too.

Slightly hazy golden straw color. Muted nose of faint sulphur. Very light grainy taste with tart fruitiness in the finish that hinted at residual grain sugar. Noticeably drier than the average Belgian pils, but without the firm malt body of a good German or Czech pils. This was like a glorified Stella Artois.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Beer Run (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Clean gold with short cap of nearly white tightly bubbled head with average retention and a few spots of lace.

S: Light malty aroma with cereal grains and noble hops. Pretty standard.

T: Pretty well-malted with solid cereal, pale grain maltiness and Czech-style noble hopping. As far as a standard pilsner goes, this does the trick pretty cleanly but doesn't really any standout features - it just tastes like the pilsner that plenty of other breweries put out there.

M: Clean with good bitter, crispness. Body is light-medium and the finish is moderately dry and bitter.

O: It fulfills the style just fine, but you want to drink beer that is more than "fine" I think.

On tap at The Belgian Room in NYC.

Pours a clear golden. Topped by a thick, white head that fades to a film, leaving nice lace. The aroma is crisp and grainy with notes of citrus and pepper.

Sweet upfront with a light, fruity citrus quality. Moves through to a finish with banana and citrus. A very faint bitterness in the finish. Medium-bodied with ridiculously low carbonation. I think upping the carbonation would really help this one a lot.

500 mL bottle,

A: Pours gold with streaming bubbles. Long-lasting white head, some thick lace.

S: Sweet bready malt, grass, bit of a cheap German lager smell.

T: Bready pils malt with a small bit of noble hopping. Husky grain flavour, a tad astringent on the back end.

M: Light-bodied, some crisp carbonation. Drying at the end, a bit cloying at times.

O: An OK beer, the brown bottle gave me no skunk problems in this style which is nice. Too overpriced for what you get; I could buy a bottle of Weihenstephaner for a buck less.

16.9 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

This beer is a golden straw yellow with great clarity and lots of bubbles coming up through the glass. The small head has reduced to a thin layer. It smells bready and sweet with some grassy notes. Taste is pretty much the same with the typical bite at the end. The beer is full bodied, medium carbonation, drinks smooth, and has some lingering bitterness. This is a pretty standard euro pale lager.
