One of the first beers from Chicago that I really didnt enjoy much. Served in pint glass, no head, dark as can be in color, with poor head retention. Smell was of malt, raisin, alcohol, and some cararmel. I could tell of that bat this was a strong beer. Taste was ok, for a stronger beer it went down ok. Taste of some dark fruit, some bread, some caramel and chocolate with a bit of a sharp alcoholic bite at the end. Definite warming sensation as it goes down. Medium mouthfeel with a slightly bitter/warming aftertaste. Overall an ok beer, a bit strong for me but drinkable.

Sampled on-tap at brewpub in April 2006.

This Strong Scotch Ale poured a dark, red-brown color with creamy, light brown foam that settled slowly. The smell was malty with a hint of cocoa. The taste was richly malty with a touch of sweetness. There was an undertone of cocoa, and perhaps a hint of peat (?). The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with full body and modest carbonation. The lightly sweet, malty flavor lingered in the mouth. This was a very nice beer, good for slow, leisurely drinking.

This beer pours an average size light brown creamy head of lasting longevity. Good lacing follows each taste of this clear reddish-brown brew that has a soft carbonation.

The aroma is sweet toasted malt with a bit of smoke over a slight hop presence as toffee follows through. No fruit esters allows the malt to capture the senses.

I really like the moderately sweet flavor of caramel fading to alcohol as the texture maintains a creamy full body feel.

This Scottish Ale is a fine example of the style and at 8.9 % gently warms the body as it soothes the mind. Brewed in N.J.

The Chicago Scotch Ale is one of their special beers, available seasonaly. I found it on tap during the winter. As a special beer, it costs more for a growler fill, but it was worth it.

This is a malt bomb, which I guess is what you should expect from a Scotch Ale. The flavor was very rich, the maltiness was very aggressive and seemed very much caramelized. The hop presence was basically undetectable. You could call this the opposite of an Arrogant Bastard Ale. Alcohol was not present in the taste, but it seemed to have a pretty high ABV - I would guess at least 8% based on how it hit me.

This is probably one of the finest beers I've had from an American brewpub. A big beer that is very easy to enjoy. I will miss it when they rotate it off the menu.
