First had: Ellis Island Brewery & Casino

An okay dunkel-style brew. Poured slightly hazy, dark brown with a decent white head. Nutty aroma with toasted malts; not too distinctive. Light caramel malts to the taste, some nuttiness and a little sweetness. Pretty light mouthfeel, not quite watery, but not much body. Pretty easily drinkable.

On-tap at the source itself, on to the beer:

It's not really dark, more like an amber brown color. Not a lot of head or retention from this offering. The aroma is mild in intensity, but sweet. Raisins and toffee make up the dynamic duo that take the nostrils.

Tastes pleasant as well. Some toasted malt notes and fruit esters make this beer taste good. Don't forget about the toffee. The mouth is semi-buzzy, and light in feel. Drinks fine.

Not bad at all. For a beer that cost me $2 for a pint, it was money well spent.

Dark? Probably more like a black and tan. The beer is quite light in color and intensity, taking on a standard brown ale look. Light on head formation and lighter on retention, the beer offers no more.

Aromas of nuttiness, light caramel malts, and wetted grains-- it just doesn't stand up as a Stout, Porter, or Dunkel.

Flavors of wet grains is most prevailent. This is accompanied by those light caramel malts found in the nose. Low hopping rated do little to give balance or character to the beer.

Again, grainy and lightly astringent in the textures with a light caramel finish.

The beer is quite plain and ambiguous. Difficult to qualify with any style, again like a black and tan.

C: brown but not opaque, I could see right through it.
S: faint almost missing, maybe a little malt.
T: average I knew it was a lager before I asked the bartender,
M: medium carbonation, but did not set well on the tongue
D: I had one, even though they were only a dollar a piece.

A clear brown with a thin and quickly dissipating head. Aroma of faint caramel... had to strain a bit to get much of anything. Flavor was malty with a light sweetness and a faint herbal finish. Crisp and clean, with a medium body and medium carbonation. Nothing outstanding... a very average beer.

This beer (described on the menu only as "not a bock") was light brown in color, and poured clear with white foam that left some lace. The smell was faint but malty. The taste was very thin, but malt could be tasted, as well as a bit of hops (floral) in the aftertaste. The drinkability was average. Overall, ok for style, but lacking in body and flavor.
