German-style refillable growler filled at People's Pint on 10/23/04, enjoyed on 10/25/04.
First imperial pint glass pours with an uneven, yet airy in spots 1/4" beige head, which did not last very long, fading to a film with about half coverage of some bubbles. Little to no lacing. Cloudy orangey-brown brew, with a sweet malty aroma that also shows some indication of hops, but not a lot. Alcohol is evident. Taste is all sweet malts, with hops trying to get in on the show but falling short of overcoming the dominant malt character, which again fades into alcohol notes. Mouthfeel is smooth, and alcohol isn't overpowering, which is nice, works well with the overall package. Drinkability is good, as long as you aren't looking for large sessions, the 9% will kick your, well, it will let you know who's boss.
Note I have rated this brew on its own merits, not against the DIPA style ideal, as I feel it sort of crosses over to the barleywine style in some aspects.
