Good deep black appearance, nice and sludgy. 1/2" tan & cherry cola like head. Looks impressive. Aroma was hot, hot alcohol and liquified toothpicks the likes of which I haven't seen since Splinter Black. Just simply put, barrel aging does have a point of diminishing returns, and I would say over 2 years is definitely there (also see Bruery's Chronology series, where the 24 month beers are not as good as the ones in the middle like 12 and 18 months of aging). For sure bourbon is there, but wood and alcohol are there in a bigger way.

Normal Scytale is a big enough beer, but now it just takes on more of that aspect. Dark brownie batter chocolate. This isn't a sweet beer. I did notice that the taste and mouth feel are nowhere near as harsh as the aroma. This is better, like the 404/385 versions, almost smoother.

But ultimately, this costs twice as much as the superior versions of the beer with 1/2 the barrel aging. Perhaps something in the 500-600 day range would have been a better jump, I dunno. This isn't a bad beer, but it isn't an improvement.

L: pourd into a snifter. pours likes a jet black oil with a very thin creamy head at the rim.
S: big bourbon wiffs as I swirled in the glass followed by vanilla and charred oak and dark chocolate.
T: A roasty chocolatly decadent with undeniable charred up whiskey notes followed by dark fruity vanilla spices and honey!
F: first thing that jumped up at me was how very smooth it was at 58.3 ibu 6% less than its 385 scytale brother not too thick but just right! . Very smooth for its high alc. 13% that hides very Well
O: A grandslam from Great Basin brewery, 808 hence ba for that many days sure paid fine contributes to this fine wax bottle that was limited to 2 per person and only 300 in production well worth the fee.
