Ordered one of these during the Best in the West Rib Cook-Off this past weekend. Following review written from notes.
Served in a 10oz. plastic cup. (Typically glass, but they serve everything in plastic on the weekend of the Cook-Off.)
Appearance: Appeared to be pitch black, but it's hard to tell since it was served in a clouded plastic cup. A small, creamy, brown cap sat on top and drug cobweb-like lacing. Head retention seemed pretty low, but this was also a small serving and didn't have much head to begin with.
Smell: Caramel and Tootsie Roll-like chocolate. Smoke was also apparent, but to a lesser extent.
Taste: Molasses and bourbon-like characteristics along with wood, roasted malt, and toffee. Dark fruits peeked through in a warm, estery, finish. Charred wood could be found throughout (especially in the finish), and dark chocolate also popped up from time to time. Hop bitterness was a little lower than I'd like, but there was good complexity and balance to this one.
Mouthfeel: Thick and creamy with light carbonation. Finished dry, but not too dry. Aftertaste and mouth-coating were pretty mild for the style.
Drinkability: I enjoyed the taste of this one, but a little more TLC would make this RIS dy-no-mite. Still, this went down pretty quick. I'd order it again.
