Another beer from Strange Brew 2018 Festival at Brewer's Cabinet. Thankfully, this beer, like almost all of them at the festival were better than what Brewer's Cabinet brought. Pours a substantial orange and bronze color with an ultra thin 1/8" off white head. Aroma kicks down some nice banana aromatics, it doesn't get across the wheat or bubblegum yeast aspect frequently associated with hefeweizens, but it does deliver on the banana notes.
The brown ale/malt aspect of the beer gives it a little more substance (and barley) than a straight hefe would have, and I think it pairs with the additional sweetness that would be misplaced in a traditional hefeweizen. It wasn't overly sweet, but it did a difficult task: make an experimental non traditional beer palatable. If you're not a banana fan, you won't dig on this likely, but in terms of what it was designed to be, I think above average scorewise indicates they really hit the mark in terms of what they were likely going for.
Me, I'm not a huge banana, hefe or brown ale fan, but I recognize this beer for what it is, and they did well with it.
