Had this one on tap at the source, part of a flight. I had seen the promotional emails and wanted to try this. Sounds like a great beer. After giving it time to warm, dug right in. Looks like a solid beer, aroma not bad but typically better on barrel aged ones. Got some souring notes in this which was unwelcome. Overall a letdown.

Sample pour at brewpub:
Strange, initial nose/taste I thought watered down JD barrels it was aged in.
Dark brown porteresque, nice head, some lacing
Get past initial smack I the face, a brandy-like nose, wine, tart grape, whiskey, wood. Confused how this smell rise above the initial one.
Taste follows nose, a light burnt toffee note added maybe from barrel char. More tart overall that dark ale. Flat cola, root, and wood notes also come to mind as background notes. Could almost be a poor man's sour stout. Whiskey still has some say, and maybe could be more muted. Feel is a bit thin, and that didn't change much through the drink.
Strange and I think the brewery's description doesn't help people's expectations (it's not stout-like, really - thought plays big). I had this under 3 originally, that's how different it seemed as I sipped it.
