On tap at brewpub:
It is a tad dark at the bar. Pours a lovely copper color, with obvious clarity ignoring color. Head is a light tan, maybe a hint of pink, head stays capped on top of the beer for a long while, providing copious lacing.

Definitely a tad bready and the rye is present, but the bittering notes come out clearly as well. Not a powerful overall nose, but a woody to lightly floral note comes with some earthy spice notes (though might be influenced by the rye).

Malt isn't too sweet up front and is a little cleaner than I'd expect from a rye beer. Dry rye notes are noticed, and a woody bitterness backs it up. Little spice pricks the tongue nicely along with some lingering carbonation to provide an interesting note going into the end taste. The end is clean bitterness that lightly dries the tongue.

Decent for a rye beer, not pale at all, so I assume they were playing on it being an IPA. I didn't think the hops character lived on its own quite enough to go that far. A bitter-leaning rye beer, for sure, and a quite decent one at that.

On tap at Smoke and Barrel.

6.5% Rye IPA brewed with Galaxy and double dry-hopped with Simcoe

Appearance: Good looking beer. Deep ruby color with nice clarity. Big, fluffy head with tight bubbles that holds a 1/2 finger ring. Webby lacing.

Smell: Really nice hop aroma. Big passionfruit and tropical character with some underlying citrus and pine. Plays super well into some rye spice and hints of darker malt character.

Taste: So much potential here. Hope they re-brew with some minor tweaks. Exceptionally dry, which detracts from the hop juiciness and enhances the bitterness. One of the more perceived bitter beers I've had in some time. A sharp, almost astringent bitterness that lingers. The hop flavor that does come through is great, with similar characteristics to the aroma.

Feel: Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation. Extremely dry with a huge, punchy bitterness that lingers and lingers and lingers.

Overall: This has a ton of potential. Hope they re-visit and tweak the dryness/bitterness a bit.
