Okay, they list this as a “Black Barleywine” similar to Batch 700, but this has all the makings of a strong Black IPA. I debated American Strong Ale, but the hoppy nature of this led me to Black (Cascadian) Ale.
Near black in appearance, there’s a nice, light tan structured head. This falls to a thick foamy collar with swaths of head across the surface.
Nose is mostly roasty, with coffee tendencies. A little chocolate orange holiday candy is also noted.
Taste is a little more towards the latter aspects of the nose. Very light burnt toast note provides early bitter counts to the chocolate and citrus mix. There’s a light green pine woody note that gets more bitter and piney by the end of the taste. The beer remains in good balance, though it has a wide base. Medium, leaning towards full body has a silky feel that is interrupted by tickling carbonation.
A quite enjoyable black ale. The alcohol isn’t noticeable to me, until maybe near the bottom of the glass where a little hint of dark brown sugar also peeks through. A difficult beer to categorize, but an enjoyable quaff regardless.
