From 03/25/12 notes. Had on tap at the brewpub. Tried next to the same beer that had been dry hopped with more hops.

a - Pours a medium mahogany brown color with one inch of off white head and low to moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of nuts, toasted malts, burnt malts, bread malts, light caramel, and light fruity malts. Pretty nice nose, a lot of nice malts to it.

t - Tastes of nuts, fruity malts, toasted malts, bread malts, tofee, caramel, biscuit malts. Not as much going on as the nose and not as strong, though still nice.

m - Light to medium body and moderate carbonation. Very easy to drink.

o - Overall a very solid brown ale. I actually like the nose of the dry hopped version much better as it added a ton of pine hops to the above, though I preferred the taste of this normal version better. Cool to try side by side, worth checking out if you're looking for an easy drinking brown ale.

Draft at the source.

Mahogany body with a broken, bubbly tan head. Aromas of toffee, malt, perhaps a hint of smoke?, fruity caramel malts. Similar flavor. Dark toast with subtle roasty notes. Light body with low carbonation. Pretty good.

Not my favorite beer from this place to date but it is fine. Served at the source in a pint glass. Beer is brown with a mild haze, thin tan head, some lacing, moderate to low carbonation.

Aroma is mildly hoppy, piny / fruits, with a little malt.

Beer is light in body, a little bitter on the back end from the some hops, but the overall beer is a little bland, if not for a mild bitterness it would be like water. I won't repeat this beer.

From tap to nonic pint glass at Mad Fox on 11/29/11

A: Healthy bootstrap brown leather in color. A one finger, off-white head fades quickly. No lacing or collar.

S: Honestly? It smells like a pizza crust. It's not a bad bouquet, it's simply not what I'd expected. Not getting any specific hop or predominant malt profile. Just pizza crust.

T: The earthy, nutty and creamy flavors I look for in an English Brown Ale aren't readily available. What is up front is a pleasantly light char, and I do mean light. A twinge of copper and toasted malt wash over the mid, and the finish is dry, with minimal lasting effect.

M: This is where the beer falters a bit. It's watery and rather thin from beginning to end. In effect, it keeps the beer from maximizing the flavor's potential, as a bigger, more robust body would pump up the volume like Christian Slater.

O: Mad Fox's Geordie Brown Ale is a decent stab at the English Brown style. Nowhere close to the best in class, and certainly not the cream of Mad Fox's portfolio. As a rough draft it works. As a finished product, it's merely ok.
