The beer pours a nice creamy brown head that dissipates quickly but leaves a nice and light creamy film on the top of the beer. The beer itself is a good looking black with a nice texture that shows it has some feel to it.

The smell and taste are fairly decent. It has an interesting sweet dark chocolate note with a subtle and moderate bitter hop note and lightly roasted note. The bitterness mainly comes from the hop note and contrasts nicely with the chocolate.

The feel is pretty good. It has a heavy body and some light carbonation with a slightly dry finish.

Overall, a fairly good stout. It isn't bold but it's definitely worth it.

Beer picked up by Thorpe, thanks. Beer served in a snifter. Beer is black with a brown thin head. Some lacing. Moderate to low carbonation.

Aroma is sweet, mildly yeasty, some roast / chocolate.

Beer is an unfortunate shadow of the cask vanilla version of the same beer. It is a little sweet a little ashy / roasty. Decent but not nearly as good as the cask.

Growler shared by drabmuh, who always seems to have a new growler everywhere he shows up. Thanks Matt!

The beer is dark brown, nearing black with a tan head that leaves some decent lacing on the tulip. I seem to remember typing this description before...The aroma brings chocolate, roast, light vanilla, subtle alcohol. Decent flavor, with a pronounced charred roast character coming through more and more as the beer warms a bit. Medium bodied with appropriate carbonation. Perhaps a bit too much on the charred / burnt roasted malt, but otherwise a nice offering from Mad Fox.

On tap @ the Mad Fox Brewing Company (Falls Church, VA) on 2/11/12. Served in a snifter.

Pours black, with a ½ finger of burnt looking mocha colored head. This retains with mostly a creamy ring around the edges of the glass and some thin wisps in the middle, leaving back a foamy cascade of light spotty lacing that quickly slides down the sides. The aroma smells of burnt smoky grains, which mingle with notes of bitter citrus and a touch of darker fruit. A sweeter dose of malt comes out across the back, with chocolate and caramel flavors being present the most. That combo of roast and hops mostly dominate this though.

The taste is chocolate, caramel, and some lighter coffee flavors, which encircle a firm core of hoppy citric bitterness and like the nose, some much more gentle feeling dark fruit character. This is dark, burnt, and very smoky feeling along the back of the profile, which hangs on the breath after each sip and sticks to the tongue with some leftover notes of bitter fruit. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied and firm and prickly feeling up front but does get a little smoother feeling across the back. This is fairly sharp feeling in the mouth overall though and while there is some light warmth present, this mostly hides its alcohol very well.

This was decent for the most part but came off as a lot more roasty and bitter than I usually like in the style, with more of a flat flavorful strength to it in place of the complexity that you would normally expect from an RIS. A bit more sweetness and flavor from the malts, yeast, or even that higher alcohol would have been welcomed. Still, for a first time effort from here, this was still enjoyable.

Picked up a growler of this 48 hours ago. Poured aggressively from a 64 oz. growler into a pint glass.

a - Pours a very dark mahogany brown color with two to three inches of dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of roasted malts, milk chocolate, coffee, toasted malts, and some light dark chocolate. Very roasty and a nice mix of sweet and dark chocolate.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, milk chocolate, vanilla or cream, dark chocolate, coffee, light anise, and sweet dark fruits. As it warms up more dark fruit and a little sweeter, I think I like the taste a little better then the nose.

m - Medium to full body and moderate carbonation. Thick and creamy, very nice feel for a stout. Does not feel like 9%.

o - Overall I thought this was a very good beer, and one of Mad Fox's better beers. I know they are different styles, but I think I like this better than their Porter, Irish Dry Stout, and Oated Oak. Still enjoy their Two Hemispheres and Orange Whip the best, but their best beer in the stout department, and I look forward to the BA version.
