Rich and pleasing hybrid, hitting a black dipa range with the sense of a US barleywine.

Presentation: Growler from Bill Madden´s Mad Fox. Menu offers a general description of the brew and anniversary occasion. Notes 8% Alc. by Vol. Not a fan of the name or the reference. But OK: It is batch 300… And cheers to this and many more anniversary batches! Served in a tulip glass from the growler.

A - Deep brown pour, close to black. Nice small creamy head with medium retention, and some nice strokes of lacing.

S - Resinous roasted sense, pine with notes of caramel and a touch of pumpernickel.

T - Complex hoppy notes, resin, a bit herbal, rides over caramel and roasted notes, touch of coffee, hint of chocolate in the distant background.

M - Medium to medium-full body with light and right carbonation. There is a deceptively inviting creamy texture with a hint of stickiness in the finish. Nice lingering bitterness that shows off its complexity.

O - Really nice range, dangerously drinkable if one digs this complexity.

Notes: Really not quite matching (any) style, and that is fine by me… This flows really nicely. At the brewpub the hefty backbone notes seemed more prominent, the growler fill takes a bigger exposure at the hops over the roasted malts… Different setting and palate I guess. They threaten to age this in some barrels for some future release: I'd love to try some of that.

Batch 300, on cask. Pours a still mahogany with a small grey head with good retention and lacing. Lot happening on the nose and palate. Aromas are primarily hoppy, with lots of piney and floral notes coming through and forming a lovely fragrance with sweet undertones of molasses. This rich brew is assertively sweet and malty on the front palate before a zesty, resinous bitterness brings harmony to the mid and back palates. Pleasantly spicy finish. Quite expensive but very tasty.

S: fresh, very fruity hops, some dark fruity malt in the background.

L: very dark brown bordering on black. Light tan head that dissipates slightly. Ok lacing.

T: pungent hoppiness up front with some clorasceptic like flavor. Semisweet maltiness. Medium high bitterness with a very cough drop like menthol flavor. A touch of dark roastiness intermingling. Menthol heavy finish, semi- dry. Menthol flavors fade a little as it warms.

M: medium full body. Medium low carbonation.

Wow, was expecting a lot better out of mad fox. This beer was dry hopped twice according to the menu, something went wrong. Whatever variety they used is putting off tons of menthol like flavors with the malt. Just does not work, too bad.
