500ml capped bottle into a Side Project snifter. This is different than the retired barrel-aged version of this beer. This is aged 15 months in barrels from an un-named distillery.
Pours dense and dark. Small head, great, sticky legs. Pitch black color. Viscous. Nose is booze, chocolate, roasted malt, smoke, prunes, sweet soy sauce, and tobacco. Very aromatic. Beer opens with a slight booziness. I get notes of coca cola, chocolate, plum, raisin, and roasted malt. Semi-sweet chocolate, more roast, and a touch of smoke in the middle. Oak, tobacco, and a slight peatiness and brine at the finish. Real nice complexity. Body is medium to full with moderate to low carbonation. Smooth and oily on the palate but goes down just a touch coarse. Boozy on the finish and aftertaste.
Very solid though I did expect a bit better body here.
