On tap at Lucky Baldwins Trappiste in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a hazy orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, fruit, wood, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour malt, fruit, earth, and Brett flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a mild sourness that makes this one interesting.

This is described as a "sour barrel-aged old ale." That covers a lot of ground, but this seems like the ideal amount of souring to me. It's not really sour, but deeply tangy with an acidic touch. Instead of the usual vinegar nose, this starts with a fine aroma of fruit and fermentation. Great mouthfeel to go with the tanginess.

A little caramel syrupy taste provides an interesting sweetness, but then the tangy tartness moves in. The finish is quite bitter to add to the surprises. The barrel flavor is a little woody, but just the right hint of the booze makes it through. Some dark fruits, tangerine, grapey flavors, and a dark cedar edge.

Like most of the brews from Craftsman, this provides surprises and flavor but with subtlety. This is one of my top favorites ever from Mark Jilg. This is just such a better example of how to add some sour hints while making excellent drinkability the result. On tap at Blind Lady Ale House in San Diego.
