Consumed at Hamilton's Tavern, San Diego CA, 05/21/08.

Beer appears virtually black in the goblet: no highlights. No head, just a little foam around the edges.

Oddly, no aroma from this barrel-aged imperial stout.

Flavor is mellow almost to the point of blandness. Distant wood and whiskey (bourbon?) are the main flavors. A vague hint of chocolate. Watery texture. No carbonation.

I did not care for this beer at all. I left the majority of it undrunk on the bar as I left. My experience with it differs so much from other reviewers that I wonder if the keg was old, if this batch was bad or if the recipe changed.

12 ounce goblet at Beachwood BBQ for $5.50

Color was black and barely let any light through when held up to the lamp on the ceiling, very nice tan creamy head that was a little over a half inch, lots of sticky lacing and good retention for a BA beer

Smell was dominated by bourbon but there was also some very strong oak aromas, also a small amount of dark roasted chocolate and creamy smells, almost like a sweet coffee aroma

Taste was bourbon whiskey immediately and lasting all the way through, until this one really warmed I could not really distinguish between anything else because this liquor taste was so strong, once the beer got warmer, its complexity started to show, first with sweet vanilla and caramel, then a milk chocolate flavor a little later, the oak barrel taste was evident during the last few sips in full force, hints of espresso in the last sip or two as well, could really tasted the dark roasted malt later on, no hops whatsoever, overall this was a really good barrel aged beer that had a strong hard alcohol aftertaste

Thew body was relatively light for a stout but it was not overly carbonated and the tasted lasted a very long time, two to three minutes probably, the bourbon kept attacking the back of my tongue, almost causing a stinging sensation

This one gives new definition to the term sipper, it took me well over an hour to finish this, felt like there was tons of alcohol in this, probably over ten percent, it was not too heavy on the stomach, just a lot of bourbon and strong boozy feel, would make a great dessert beer, went great with my barbeque beef sandwich and sweet potato fries, probably could have finished another goblet of this but that would have been about it

I agree with the other review in that this is one of the lighter Russian Imperial Stouts out there, the barrel aging is most likely the reason why, I highly recommend this to anybody that finds this on draught, Craftsman has made another fantastic beer and continue to make themselves one of my favorite local breweries, easily the best one of their brews I have had, significantly better than the regular Edgar

This one seemed more like syrup than beer but it was very tasty, it was thin but definitely had a molasses feel to it, nice bite to it and a super hot finish to go along with an initial in your taste, this is one of the better BA beers I have tasted, wish they bottled their beer because this would be something that is certainly worth checking out

On-tap at the Beachwood BBQ, in Seal Beach, CA,

A: Pours a motor oil black, with a small tan head, and good lacing.

S: Smells havily of bourbon whiskey, oak, and charcoal.

T: Taste is very similar, with a dark, oaky, wood flavour dominating the palate. The bourbon comes in, in the end, adding some warmth to the brew, with roasted character and coffee present throughout. I haven't had the original, so I have nothing to base a comparison on, but I thought the flavour in this beer was quite good.

M: One of the lightest feeling RIS's that I have ever had, don't know if this was from the bourbon barrel aging or what, but it needed more heft for this style, nice smoothness, and a creamy feel though.

D: Another good beer from Craftsman, not great, but quality stuff. It's nice to have a relatively local brewer experimenting around with styles. Definitely worth a try.
