On tap at Lucky Baldwins in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, earth, caramel, banana, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, banana, and spice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with nice banana and spice qualities that are slightly better in the aroma.

A- Is this a little darker than other Dunkelweisse? I'm not sure, may just have been the lighting at Blind Lady Ale House at the time. Nice creamy head and lacing.

S- Chocolate smell is strongest, but doesn't oppress the other refeshing Geramn wheat beer smells. Although, not as much orangey citrus as I may have suspected.

T- See my overall description.

M- Silky, you are tempted to drink this much faster than you should.

O- A lovely Dunkleweisse, even if not necessarily centered squarely to the German style. Like many great Dunkleweisse, you need to be careful with this one... it'll drink much much faster than the 8.1% its bringing to the table. The nice alcohol tastes on the front smooth off so quickly as the silky mouthfeel leads you into a molasses/light chocolate taste that centers up to the wheat beer profile. Still has that 'refreshing' essence of a Weisse, not like a chocolate porter/stout.

Perhaps the biggest compliment I can say about this beer is that it does to me the same thing any German weisse does -- I want to just take big, refreshing, delicious GULPS of this beer as I drink it! Will be looking for this on tap again for sure.

Fair warning: Written by a guy who loves German weisse beers. not sure if that makes me more forgiving or more harsh.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours a cloudy medium brown with a light cap of white foam, average retention, spotty to no lacing.

S: Solid banana bread, dark sugar, molasses.

T: Malt-oriented, the banana and spicy esters are not as pronounced as in the smell. Definitely wheat bread, very mild bubblegum.

M: Carbonation is quite light for the style, light-bodied and creamy, drinkable.

D: A solid drinking dark wheat. Another good beer from Craftsman, check it out.
