Notes: Collaboration with Melvin Brewing

Melvin and Toppling Goliath jumped headfirst into this pale ale collaboration beer, creating a brew that slams your senses with aroma. Simcoe and Amarillo hops tag team to create notes of candied apricot, sweet honeysuckle, and orange.

Tasted in a pint glass from draft at Countyline Tavern on January 10, 2020. Brewed in collaboration with Melvin Brewing Company. Hopped with Simcoe and Amarillo. Notes of candied apricot, sweet honeysuckle and orange citrus.

Pours an almost clear light yellow with a thick white head. Decent retention and nice lacing. Aroma is mild, citrusy and hops. Flavor follows the nose but is bolder. Lemon and grass are the front flavors with a nice bitterness in the finish. Feel is crisp and well carbonated. Overall another nice beer from Toppling Goliath and collaborators Melvin.

Strong aroma - citrus / apricot & orange, hints of something more bitter - grapefruit, perhaps.

Crystal clear golden bright color with plentiful rising bubbles under a 1 inch white, bubbly / creamy head. Decent retention, leaving rings of thick lacing and a cratered top as it does recede. A beautiful old-school look. These days, when a brewery (or 2 in this case) brings out an APA that is NOT hazy, that counts as innovative in the current market. Or, thumbing their nose at the current market. Either way, it is much appreciated.

Taste is classic APA, only a swing to the slightly juicy side, again with apricot leading with other citrus taste just behind. The malts provide a bready presence in the background. The only hints of bitterness begin in the middle and linger into the aftertaste, initially more from the citrus flavor, but in the finish, more of the classic hops bitterness (but only slightly bitter), which has a long, lingering life on the tongue.

The feel is initially smooth, transitioning to something with a bit of an edge. Body is appropriate to the style.

Overall, a nicely balanced and flavorful APA. Both TG and Melvin should be proud of the result. If this was available in 12 oz or pint packages, I'd buy more for sure. As it is, I bought 2 bombers and am greatly looking forward to enjoying the 2nd one.

Melvin + Toppling Goliath + hops makes me believe there will be less letdown than the typical collab. 22 oz. bottle split with the wife.

The pour is old school golden yellow. The nose is citrus & floral. Doesn’t give off any harshness at all.

Ladder Mash is a nice mix of Lizzo & Wang Chung. There is a soft, gentleness to the mouthfeel that rivals a lovely NE IPA, juiciness of the mango & papaya & somesuch. Finish brings rough citrus with enough bitterness to let me know this isn’t a Pepsi product. Smooth, simple, & so easy to drink.

Four packs would have been much better; this rivals peak Pompeii . An excellent beer from two really good breweries.

Picked-up a single bomber bottle for nine dollars at Cedarville Wine & Spirits. My 15th brew from TG, have had about 5 from Melvin. This is a decent brew, but not worth ~ 32/4-pack.

Darker gold and crystal clear. Modest head which leaves a couple of streaks on the glass.

Beautiful hop aroma blended between floral and piney.

The base starts off semisweet with a strong presence of papaya and Juicy-fruit gum. The hop is strong and biting enough to balance the brew well. Rich bodied; moderate carbonation. Long, slowly fading bitter aftertaste.

Pours a mostly clear golden color with slight hazing with the lacing. Smell tropical and fruity, some earthy smells. Taste was citrus/orange forward with some passion fruit and honey dew. A soft mouth feel with a earthy pine finish balanced well with sweet malts. A good solid APA, would not buy again thou, too many others at lower $$ to choose from.
