Foggy amber with a dull gold glow against the setting sun. It's not as clear as could be, but makes up for it with a pleasant hue, and dense off white head.

For an aged ale the aroma is big and fresh, and smells a lot like brown bread and caramel. There's just a touch sourness which adds to the impression of freshness. This is shaping up well.

Booze comes right through on the palate, and persists into the finish, but there's none of the richness I was expecting. Maybe there's some stewed apricot, or raisin there, and definitely some caramel but the alcohol masks a lot of the flavour, and it finishes empty.

Carbonation is possibly a touch high, or at least appears high as there's not a great deal in the way of mouthfeel. Initially there's some coating of the palate, but it's quick to dissipate, but on a positive note the bitterness is nicely balanced.

Kudos to Hix for putting their malt where there mouth is by producing a Barley Wine, but this one falls short of the mark. It's certainly an inviting looking and smelling offering which shows great potential, but for this vintage at least, it just falls apart from there.
