Brauereigasthof Schneider

This is a gem in out-of-the-way Essing, a bit west of Regensburg. It's another rustic little place, set between the Main-Donau Canal and some stone cliffs . Their brewhouse is a building right next to it, and their Gasthaus (where I stayed for 3 nights) is just across the street. Entering the place you are in a small foyer with a display case filled with bier bottles, malt, hops, and info about their bier and brewing. Further ahead you'll find the Stammtisch straight on, with the service bar to your left. Going a bit further leads to a small Stube of about 6-7 tables. If you instead go right upon entering you come to 2 further rooms, with dozens more tables. Through the building and out back is a lovely patio with another 8-10 tables, overlooking the canal. Each room is lit to no more than a medium level at night, and has great paneling and woodwork all over. Numerous old photos of past brewers, mugs, bottles, copper-kettle lamps and other bier-related paraphernalia decorate the place. The owner/head brewer, Herr Schneider, has been here on the job since 1984, and it's been in his family since the 1800's. His staff is friendly, helpful and welcoming. They have 5 year-round biers here: Hell and Dunkel (both vom Faß), and bottled Pils, Märzen, and Hefeweizen. Also available seasonally are a Maibock and a Christmas lager. I had the Pils and Märzen, and both were tasty! I dined on some succulent Schweinebraten, and twice on a superb Zwiebelrostbraten. Verry good meals, believe me! Not easily reached, but definitely a keeper of a place!
