July 14th, 2015 - Hess' Hartley Pale Ale made an appearance in 2015 and I haven't seen it since. It's a fine pale ale, with a demure smell and a hoppy and scratchy flavor. It's very thick bodied though, almost like a soup, with a generic hop profile and a slight metallic tin note. It's not bad, but feels underwhelming compared to some other Hess core brews.

22 oz bomber pours a clear and bright deep straw in color and shows a solid cap of foam and bubbly effervescense. Aroma is light with pale malts and just a hint of soapy even Belgian-esque hops/yeast to it. Subtle overall.
Taste follows with a touch of lemony hop on the delivery. Warms up to become an interesting Pale Ale, and in fact a bit Blondish in style. Nice level of carboation keeps thiings in check and keeps this bottle head and shoulders above way too many lame ass beers coming out of San Diego these days.
Still, it does leave one a bit short.

Had a taster at the Miramar brewery in San Diego. Not much of a small, tasted a bit bitter.

The essential information for this beer is is is hopped with Citra and brewed with "a high percentage of rye malt." On tap at Toma Sol in Mission Hills.
Attractive light amber with a decent head in the pint shaker. Medium body with a rich mouthfeel. Deliciously aromatic with a bitter finish that is sobering, but only for a moment. The wonderful hops set the right tone. Citra rules!
The rye adds just the right spiciness. This must be the best Hess brew ever, a surprising turn, I am happy to report. Please, Sir, may I have some more?
