Brownish-orange amber in the glass. Quite hoppy at first taste, and not very sweet. Lots of roast flavors. Browned biscuits and cereal. Quite a lot of grain flavors followed by the bitterness. Some caramel and sawdust in the nose. Just a slight malty mellow sweetness. Fairly piney with hops as you sip. Rather dry in the aftertaste. A definitely hoppier style of Alt, more like a malty amber ale with Pale Ale hoppiness.
The holiday offering from Hess. Enjoyed at Local Habit in San Diego. Interesting and distinctive seasonal beer.
