650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle #392.

Appearance - Inky black with a nice mocha head. Faint wisps on the surface and a thin mocha collar.

Smell - Lots of black patent malt. A little bit of barrel but not a ton. I thought it was the rye barrel I smelled but I guess it's just rye in the beer.

Taste - Much more barrel presence. Blending seems to diminish the efftects, but it adds a bit of oak and vanilla. Rich chocolate and more black patent malt. Intense bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Thick and chewy. Slight bit of acidity that detracts just a little bit. The barrel smooths out the finish.

Overall - It's not without its flaws, but it's nice. Would be nice to see what 100% barrel would have done to this.

Closing out 2013 with this bottle. Thanks Roy for this little gem! Bottle #277

A - Pitch black with impressive mocha colored head. Tiny bubble residual with nice lacing.

S - Coffee, chocolate, rye, vanilla, molasses, raisins, figs, tobacco.

T - Starts out with the spicy rye immediately up front followed by the bourbon, waves of strong molasses, coffee, chocolate and booze soaked figs with light vanilla undertone.

M - Medium bodied with light carbonation. Spice from the rye coats the mouth and lingers.

O - Very good barrel aged stout with a spicy rye twist. Slightly over spiced but this beer is a real treat.

A: Pours pretty much black with a thin foamy tan head. Some spotty lacing down the glass.

S: Lots of roasted malt, dark chocolate, molasses, a touch of coconut and some bourbon. Smells pretty tasty.

T: Some light milk chocolate upfront, roasted malt and rye, powdery dark chocolate and some char with a touch of bourbon on the finish. Mouthfeel
Is slick without being too thick.

Bottle pour at Woodshop 7 held at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, wood, and slight bourbon aromas. Taste is much the same with a woody aftertaste on the finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some solid aromas and flavors but not one of the more refined barrel aged beers out there.
