Gotta say, I expected a lot more from Bruce Dickinson! Give me MORE COWBELL, BABY!
This brew is alright. It looks, feels and tastes more like Newcastle Brown Ale. Decent. But not worth the money and the hype.
They could learn a lot from other established English Pale ale brewers. Old Speckled Hen comes to mind. Since Trooper positions itself in the same price range, might as well step up its quality.
I can buy a 12-pack of Newkie Brown for the price of a Trooper 4-pack. In fact, that's what I'll do next. Trooper-wise, it's one and done for me. Although I am mildly curious about their stronger 6% ABV brew. Oh, do we, beer drinkers, like to be disappointed...

Pours murky, gold in color with one quarter inch head. Taste is Earl Grey tea and grapefruit with a touch of mineral. Bitter, light body with moderate carbonation. Above average sessionable English ipa. I prefer others in the style but solid.

500 ml bottle, from British Corner Shop. ABV is 4.1%. Clear deep golden colour, moderate white head. Aroma of malts, toffee and nuts. Well hopped flavour for its low ABV, earthy notes, grapefruity in the bitter finish.

Chill hazed copper colored ale with essentially no head formation.
Smells fruity and strongly of British Ale yeast. Scents of caramel and leather. Toasted grain scent.
Starts out mild and bitter. Woody with a strong tea bag taste. Astringent comes to mind and it is in no way sweet. Low carbonation levels. Leather and oak after taste.
Mouth feel is OK.
Overall an OK beer.

Frederic Robinson Ltd. Unicorn Brewery "Trooper Light Brigade"
16.9 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, coded "L9008 12:06"
$4.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Being a huge fan of English ales I'm guessing I'll probably like this more than most of the reviewers on Beer Advocate but we'll see. It's poured a clear golden-amber body beneath a three finger thick head of fluffy off-white foam. Maybe I've poured it a little rough, but it'll settle down by the time I get the second half f the pint in. The aroma is brightly floral, spicy, piney, and citrusy with lemon and grapefruit over a delicate grainy malt base. The head has settled now and I've been able to pour the entire bottle into my Imperial pint glass. The flavor is just as intense as the aroma with a rich, grainy malt component. That's a little surprising at just 4.1% but I've always said that it doesn't need to be a big beer to have a lot of flavor. The hops are solid, right there with the malt, and I'm getting more of the lemon/grapefruit and pine/spice than the floral notes. It's solidly bitter, and it finishes dry and spicy with just a touch of citrus and pine lingering. The bitterness, however, lingers a lot longer. I should have also noted earlier that I'm drinking this at cellar temperature as it's meant to be, not cold out of the fridge. The head has held up quite well and there's some interesting 'mountains' and odder looking shapes rising from the surface along the side of the glass. In the mouth it's medium bodied and quite smooth with a fine-bubbled moderate carbonation. If I didn't know better I might be led to believe that it was bottle-conditioned. It's quite a nice pint.
