Ruby brown pour with excellent clarity; off-white mixed bubbles head; solid ring; sudsy lacing. Roast malt and chocolate nose. Mild bitter roast; bitter sweet dark chocolate; chocolate cereal finish. Light body; moderate minus carbonation; no warmth from 6% abv. A pleasant enough porter; tastes like Cocoa Wheats before you add the sugar; light cocoa linger.

Shared 500 ml bottle at local tasting, bought at M&S in Guernsey. ABV is 6.0%. Cognac colour, the palest "porter" I’ve seen. Moderate aroma of chocolate and dust. Chocolate flavour, but not very sweet. Bitter finish and aftertaste. Robinsons can do better than this.

500 ml bottle poured into a large Ikea beer glass. Lacy head, fairly long lasting. Sweet smell of chocolate, reminiscent of a opening a box of Quality Street; chocolate, sweet, but not great chocolate and a bit too sweet. Taste of processed chocolate, some bitterness from the hops when the sweetness fades. Not the depth I would look for in a porter. This is not great beer, but certainly worth drinking on cold winter's eve before the fire as a dessert drink.

L. Lovely deep chestnut. Little rising CO2, thin white head clears quickly to lacing
S. Deeply toasty, with rich puddingy notes. [Later as was tilting the glass to sip I got distinctly ethanol wafts].
T. Rich, fruits, into a distinct caramel note with aromatic spices on the end.
M. I like the spiciness,. I can imagine this as a dessert-beer, perhaps in autumn/winter with a generous dinner.
O. I'm more a real ale/good lager drinker than porter/stout, but this is a very nice brew. I'd happily buy this again, such a shame they've just closed the local branch of Marks and Spencers this week!

A late p.s. 3-Jan-2021.
I bought a couple more of these and was surprised/disappointed to read the ingredients. They include 'glucose syrup' which makes this an adjunct (boo-hiss!) plus 'chocolate flavouring' - WTH. Oh and CO2 as well as yeast. Well no wonder it's rich and chocolatey eh. I'm surprised a brewer as 'trad' as Robinsons took this recipe on... FWIW I won't change my earlier ratings but also I shan't be buying this fakey adjunct again either...

Bottled
Pours a mid brown body with big foaming off white head that pretty much sticks
aroma is chocolate spread on wholemeal bread
some sweetness and slight sour note, some metallic notes
the main failure is its thinness

This porter is well balanced with fantastic chocolate notes and a great finish.

Served at cellar temperature from 500ml bottle into straight pint glass.

A) Lightish chestnut brown; very light and clear for a porter. Not promising. Also looks very fizzy.

S) Sweet chocolate, fudge.

T) Chocolate is there, and it is not too sweet, so that's the first hurdle cleared. No way is it a porter; there is a distinct hop bitterness that gives it the balance as opposed to roast malt.

F) Light and fizzy, like a cheaper bottled bitter.

O) This isn't a porter and there are other better chocolate beers, e.g., Youngs. Having said that it is a perfectly pleasant and drinkable beer, there are just better examples that are easily available.

Bottle to Westvleteren 12 (small) chalice
Best by: August 2012

A: Light tan. 1.5 (mocha) fingernail head on gentle pour. Doesn't look like a porter at all.

S: Vanilla, caramel, semi-sweet chocolate, oak, and fig.

T: Overwhelmingly sweet - vanilla and chocolate that's about it here.

M: Light body with medium carbonation.

O: Doesn't look or drink like a porter. Too sweet for my liking, but pairs decently well with carrot cake as a dessert beer.

This does not look at all like a porter, and I will admit that I was a bit put-off by the appearance. Light brown with copper hints to it. More like a brown ale, or even a mild. No real head to speak of.

Mild chooclate scent, not at all belied by the taste. Very low hop profile. Malts, chocolates, toffee and a bit of a sweet buttery and nutty profile. This carries through to the taste, with a bit more bitterness to it. Sort of like a dark or a bakers chocolate taste to it.

Smooth mouthfeel, but as it warms it feels a little bit too bitter for my liking. Quite a good beer, and after the initial shock of how it looks, I quite enjoyed this.
