Pours a pitch black body with thick long lasting caramel creme coloured head.

Aromas of well buttered burn't toast, freshly ground coffee and furniture polish.

Well rounded taste starting very creamy then rich fruits, plum and damson hints of floral gums before slight charcoal and subdued hop finish.

Good solid mouthfeel and nice low key carbonation.

A subtle and easy drinking stout

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2013, so it's just out of date. Picked up a while back from Booths. According to the label, this brew is based on an original recipe dating back to 1892.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A rich, dark reddish-brown hue that appears almost black in the glass. Produces a vast head of creamy light-brown foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with hints of burnt grain, coffee, chocolate, dried fruit, caramel, faint brown sugar and earthy yeast. Robust yet rounded - lovely.

Tastes of deep roasted malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain, coffee, chocolate, dried fruit, caramel/molasses, fruity ale yeast, earthiness and stewed leaves. Well-attenuated, followed by a strident, malty bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasant carbonation but a slightly insubstantial body for the style. Could be a tad thicker. Mildly astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter roasted malt, burnt grain, coffee and cocoa.

Tasty stuff - a cut above many Robinsons offerings. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour are intensely roasty with distinct hints of chocolate. Dark but nicely balanced. OK body, though could be creamier. A very drinkable stout that goes down a treat. Well worth sampling if you come across it.
