A huge note of thanks to EinWeizenbitte who seems to have embraced the madness of The CANQuest (TM) with the best of them! This was one of those hybrid bottle-shaped CANs with a screw-top opening! Zounds. I had to first add the brewery to the site (and big ups to UncleJimbo for approving it) in order to add and review this beer. If anyone CAN read Hanzi/Kanji, I urge you to visit their website and submit changes and updates as appropriate. As my esteemed trader asked, "C[AN]'t your adopted daughter/girlfriend read Hanzi?" She's not speaking to me currently. 8=( Onward!
This will be one of my submissions for New Beer Sunday (Week 286).
I heard a faint "Phhffft!" as I unscrewed the cap, so that was a promising sign. I had just better than a finger of deep-brown head with decent retention, so things were progressing according to plan. Color was a deep cola-brown with limited light penetration at the edges. Nose had an interesting smoky sweetness, like soy sauce, although that is not an apt descriptor. Definitely not a dry stout, though. I have had several yesterday to calibrate my palate for today. CAN you tell that I was looking forward to this one? Mouthfeel was medium with a lot of dark-fruit flavors in the mouth. I tasted figs, dark cherries, plums, and raisins along with a light smokiness and a caramel undertone. I am in love! This is a phenomenal beer! It could be that I am tiring of AALs, but this was really tasty. Finish had more of a smoky charcoal aspect than a fruity one, but I could still taste the caramel sweetness throughout. Wild! Now I am curious to try some of their other CANned beers and the website seems to mention at least four more.
Here's how much I liked it: Back when milk was delivered in glass bottles, Moore's Milk of Lancaster was our major producer/supplier. One red silk-screened label depicted a young, pigtailed girl inverting the bottle only to get one last drop and making a frowning face verging on tears. I first inverted the CAN above my mouth, then began shaking it like a paint mixer, then I resorted to a vacuum pump (don't worry about why I might have one ready-to-hand), but all to no avail. Boo hoo.
