look: massive foamy white head with good retention, beer is a rich clear chestnut colour with good levels of carbonation.

smell: smells like an ok-ish brown ale, malt dominated, brown bread, pumpernickel bread, caramel, has a certain floral character to it, not much going on.

taste: ah, it’s grand, pedestrian enough, nearly all malt, brown bread, caramel, oaky, wood, earthy, nutty, but really all the flavours are very mild, light bitterness on the finish, malt flavours linger, it’s grand.

feel: light bodied, medium carbonation, perfectly drinkable, hint of lingering bitterness.

overall: my first altbier! won’t be my last hopefully, but that’s not to say that i thought this beer was great, because this was only alright, but, yknow, not bad

Served cool from 500ml bottle into pilsner mug.

Firstly, Alt should be drunk fresh from the barrel in a small glass in a pub to get the best out of this subtle style. Anyhow, it is a good style so lets have a look.

A) Clear reddish brown, very big white head that dissipates to half an inch persistent bubbly head. Lots of white lacing.

S) Nothing huge, muted caramel malts; not a lot of hop action, but that is the style.

T) Good - slightly sweet very slightly toasty malt. This is one of the sweeter Alts I have had, that differentiates it which is a good thing. No hint of bitterness at all.

M) Refreshing; carbonation is right for the style. No aftertaste; this is a session beer in Germany.

O) Better than I expected - recommended to any Alt fan and any general beer fan who wants to give the style a try.

During Jan 2012 I decided on a German beer evening: a 500ml bottle of this beer was taken during that evening, the only Alt I had at the time. It had 2 months of its ‘Best Before Life’ remaining when I poured it into three stumpy Alt glasses.

Clear almost chestnut brown body with a swiftly disappearing white head on each glass.

The smells were from the malt world, caramel and some roasted/toasted notes although the overriding malt aromas were fairly sweet.

The taste carries on with the malt flavours picked up in the nose: caramel sweet with more robust malty hints in the background. The hops do make a mini stand towards the end of each sip, not bringing any bitterness but just showing enough to stop the beer being overly sweet.

This is on the thin side for an Alt, lacked depth of body, but still pleasant enough and easy to drink.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a rich brown colour. Very white head settles down quickly.

Smells faintly malty and carbonated.

Tastes faintly malty, slightly watery too.

An interesting drink, very good aged. I'd have it again.

Light coca cola color, reddish, with a dirty white foam, quite creamy and inviting.
Lighht smell, with caramel and a bit of mou.
Same light notes in the taste, even if a bit more strong, and quite pleasatn, without being anything exceptional.
A bit too carbonated.
Decent aftertaste, not too strong.
For sure, not the best Altbier, but still drinkable, with light notes.
