Cool can, decent beer and a sweet collectible can that honors one of the greatest coaches ever.

No, this isn't the greatest lager you'll ever drink but it's not the worst and the fact that it's dedicated to Paterno bumps the rating by a half point in my book.

When you're not paying a lot for a case of beer don't be so critical and bomb review what's a decent lager at a reasonable price.

3.25 in my book based on a rough smell, average feel but an overall decent taste when you're on a budget.

We are..... Penn State!

I give it a one, because zeros are not available, bad bad taste abounds with this swill. I used to respect this brewery. Now I wait gleefully for their demise. It seems in a last ditch effort to save their sinking franchise they made a deal with the Paterno family to sell this beer in a predominantly Pittsburgh market, not smart! However this beer can't redeem it's self.i I put my contempt for Paterno behind me and reviewed this fare. Bland flat tasting beer which taste a lot like their discontinued Fort Pitt, my advice to their beer master, start playing the Pennsylvania lottery

I thought the Duquesne Lager....Paterno series was good....and it came in a neat can.....it unfortunate. Any hoo....It poured a nice amber with white head that is not leaving much lace. The scent has some sweetness and bread like qualities. The taste is evenly balanced and very easy to drink. There is good malt with biscuit flavor. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it is solid.

Darkish in color, head that dissipated, sharp but fairly pleasing taste.

DATE TASTED: January 2, 2016... GLASSWARE: 22 oz. pilsner... OCCASION... saying good night to Penn State's season--and hello to Hack's legacy--with a beer unabashedly supporting the home town heroes... APPEARANCE: a dark brown. lively body supports a nearly PSU-uniform white head with fluffy, bubbly, craggy aspects... oddly, some bubbles cling below the surface, like an iceberg... head settles reasonably to a sponge-like coaster... ... AROMA: oats and toasted malts take hold of the nostrils... biscuits and some pangs of Saaz or Spaltz further arrest the experience--more of an American pilsner by its odor... PALATE: light and fatefully buttery... light to medium bodied on the tongue, with a slow, soft flow through the throat... not as lively as it looks in the glass... little finish to speak of... the drinking--from zero to swallow--is done in short time... TASTE: slight toasted bread, some nuttiness and a bit of earthy hop and spice make for a thin, lightly engaging profile... might pair well with tailgating fare, but as a stand-alone, not a standout... OVERALL: I am guessing that Joe himself--and many tailgating fans--would love this beer for its functionality and refusal to give up the 409... but, using PSU coaches as its barometer, Duquesne has no JoePa or Rip Engel in this offering...more like a Bill O'Brien, a holdover for a beer worth committing to but serviceable in a better one's absence... the beer is fresh and is pleasant--traits fans enjoyed about Paterno himself...

A big thanks to the incredible woodychandler for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a bronze color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of light, toasted malts. Taste is toasted malts, grains light sweetness, very easy drinking. feels medium/light bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.
