Got this one as a gift from motherbrother. Cheers man!
From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled 25 August 2012
IBU: 120
OG: 1.126
FG: 1.028
This is listed as a Belgian strong here but there isn't much Belgian about it.
APPEARANCE: Pours a slightly clear but very syrupy black and yields only a small, tan head that quickly recedes to a slight wisp and ring. Pitch black with no carbonation evident. A ring remains until the end but leaves no lacing on the glass. Really black and syrupy.
SMELL: Milk chocolate, pure chocolate, sweet cream, vanilla marshmallows, caramel, toffee and butterscotch. Lots of butterscotch actually, and vanilla marshmallows as well. Candy-like. Interesting for sure.
TASTE: Toffee and butterscotch with vanilla and sweet cream. Big finish of sweet vanilla marshmallows, butterscotch, toffee candy sweetness, caramel, bitter burnt coffee and a bit of alcohol. Not the 13% I had expected, but some booze is definitely there. Lots of sweet malt flavor and the 120 IBU have a tough time making a real impact.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. A bit prickly on the palate, goes down with a slight scratch and finishes sticky on the palate. Some heat lingers. Slick and sticky for sure.
OVERALL: This is extremely bold and flavorful with lots of interesting things going on. Very sweet and sticky, which is not for everyone, of course. This is very unique and hard to score. I can definitely say I found this extremely interesting and fun to drink, but I’m not sure if it’s something I’d reach for again very quickly. Thanks again motherbrother!
