Brewery visit on 12/13/18 had one on-tap and brought home 4 16 oz. Cans from which this review was derived.
A Norwegian Farmhouse IPA brewed with a centuries-old yeast from Norway and copiously dry-hopped with experimental hop Bru-1. Abv. 6.2%
An opaque haze gives the white golden liquid a rather hefty appearance. A very substantial white foam forms densely, holds on tight to eventually dissipate to a thin cover and minimal lacing. Very healthy look.
The nose has some very unique qualities, mostly a sharp citrus bite of hops happens first. Then, it's a fremented honey sweetness with a bit of grainy wheat and herbal mixture that becomes a bit medicinal and slightly tangy from the unique yeast. Wild and tangy fruits pop right out of the hop aroma, the malt gets into some more golden grains and sweet malty aspects.
The flavor is simply one of the most unique and complex I've ever had from The Northhampton Brewery. A Norwegian ipa with experimental hops and rare yeast strain purs it over the edge. First gulp is filled with multiple layers of hoppy flavor: sharp citrus and dry earthy, grainy tones make it taste like a combo of dry-hopped and wet hopped. Dry grasses and golden wheat come from the malty balance with a hint of wild honey. The yeast brings out the most unique aspects of sour and earthy fruits and herbs, which adds a wonderfully clean funk and seems to blend perfectly with this hop strain.
The mouthfeel is juicy and crisp at first, the crispy bite quickly turns medium-smooth to lightly dry in the finish.
Medicinal herbs and dry earthy flavor's just roll on and on until your left with a hearty, earthy after taste. Very nice.
Well done, Northhampton!
