Served from the tap at the brewery as part of a flight of 4 beers. Although this is listed as an Imperial Stout I don't think it has the 'umph' of a true imperial. Nice chocolate malt taste but a bit thin on the finish. A middle of the road stout.

On tap at the Brewpub
Comes to the table a solid black frothy off white head. Huge coffee and roasted grain in the nose with bits of vanilla, caramel and earthy hops. The flavor is more roasted grain and burnt caramel than anything else. Light dark fruit and earthy hop. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. This seemed quite thin in body for the style and the flavor was not horribly complex imho. The recipe must change because I remember having this a few years back and being blown away, this time not so much.

Got this at a recent beer festival. 22oz bottle...

A: A super dark black after a medium-agressive pour into my snifter. A deep dark mocha colored head, about 1/2 inch, that fades at a decent pace and leaves some bubbles atop the brew. Good.

S: I get some nice vanilla, chocolate, and roasted malt upfront. Raisin scents in the middle with some hints of licorice on the backend. Wish the scents weren't so subdued. Decent.

T: I get some nice chocolate / vanilla notes upfront quickly followed by some hints of roastiness. A watery fullness on the backend. Good.

M: Medium body with a heavy carbonation. A watery dry finish. Decent.

O: All in all, this is a good beer, but nothing special for the category. Definitely try if you're out at Northampton, but don't hunt down.

This is my first review so please bear with me.

I tried this beer two nights ago on tap with my girlfriend, who lives in Amherst so it was a short ride over.

I really enjoyed this imperial stout

poured into a snifter it was completely black, with a decent amout if head that stayed even when it settled a bit. had a beautiful smell of espresso as soon as it was handed to me...i said to myself "boy am i in for a treat"

beautiful taste, i got a mix of mostly espresso and a little chocolate and even some subtle cherry (not sure exactly how to express this flavor, a small pit fruit flavor- cherry comes to mind) which gave a nice level of complexity to this RIS. As it warmed more of the bitter esspresso and chocolate came out. I love imperial stouts and every time i visit my GF will be comeing here again, hopefully it will be on tap again!!

I was lucky enough to catch this on tap at the Northampton Brewery on 1/17/09.

Presented in a small snifter for $4.25

Pours a jet black with a beautiful coffee colored head that looks like some cream has been mixed in.

Smells of bitter dark chocolate, spent coffee grains, dark overripe fruit.

Taste is very full. Lots of bitter chocolate, more of that coffee, some licorice and anise, prunes, caramel and vanilla. Wow, what an enjoyable beer. There is a faint dryness from the alcohol but that adds to the experience.

Love this beer. I'll be back, maybe today, for more of this. Great job on this one NB! You guys brewed an excellent RIS!
